The Challenge

Most students confuse familiarity with understanding. They reread notes until they recognize the words, but they fail to build long-term retention. Existing apps deliver content but ignore the process of learning.

The Solution

MindShape AI acts as a personal study coach. It guides students with questions instead of giving answers, generates personalized practice tests, and uses evidence-based techniques like spaced repetition and active recall to build real long-term retention.

Project Goal

Design an app that teaches students how to study through active engagement and personalized AI coaching.

01 — Research

Research & Inspiration

I started from personal experience. As a student, I noticed that most study apps make it easy to review content but never teach you how to retain it. I confirmed this with five classmates who described studying as reading the same thing over and over without knowing if it stuck. This aligned with research on passive vs active learning: students confuse familiarity with understanding.

Target Audience

Students aged 14–22 in high school and college juggling multiple classes who study hard but struggle to retain information. Specifically students who rely on rereading notes and cramming before exams without realizing there are more effective ways to learn.

Competitive Audit

I reviewed Quizlet, Khan Academy, and Duolingo to understand how they handle study sessions and feedback.

Key Finding: All three deliver content but none teach students the process of learning. None use AI to guide thinking. None track understanding vs completion separately.

02 — Define

Define

The main challenge was designing an experience that doesn't just give students content but actively guides them to understand and retain it.

Pain Points

01

Students don't know where to start when studying

02

No feedback on whether studying is actually working

03

Every student learns differently but apps treat them all the same

03 — Ideate

Ideate

I created user flows and wireframes to map how users would navigate the study experience. The focus was on helping users quickly start a session and receive AI guidance without friction.

User Flow

Mapping how a student moves from onboarding through a full AI-guided study session.

04 — Prototype

Prototype

The final design was built around two priorities: reducing friction to start a session, and making AI guidance feel like a coach rather than a quiz.

Key Features

AI-Guided Sessions

Rather than showing answers, the AI poses questions that push the student to recall information actively.

Personalized Practice Tests

Practice tests are generated on demand through the AI Tutor students simply ask, and the AI builds a test around their current topic.

Spaced Repetition

The app schedules review sessions at optimal intervals to maximize long-term retention.

Progress Tracking

Tracks understanding vs completion separately, giving students real data on what they know.
